Returning to work after a cruise can feel more challenging than returning from a conventional holiday. I think this is because cruise is such an inclusive and immersive type of vacation; for example, unlike a land-based option, meals are prepared for you, your bed is made daily, your schedule is simplified, and your environment is designed for rest and relaxation.
However, when that ends, everyday responsibilities can feel quite an abrupt wake up call to get thrown back into and therefore more demanding than they seemed before you left for your cruise. In this post, I’ll run though how with a little planning, you can make the transition to life and work back on land calmer and more organised.
Plan for Your Return Home Before You Leave the Ship
A smooth return begins before you disembark. These small arrangements can remove frustration and stress from your first 24 hours back to allow you to settle back into the real world in a more gentle way.
➡️ Book a grocery or household delivery for the day you arrive home or the following morning, so you are not immediately faced with empty cupboards.
➡️ Set aside money for a takeaway on your first evening back. After you’ve been travelling, unpacking, and possibly feeling tired or jet-lagged, not having to cook can make your return can be a real help.
➡️ Settle any household bills in advance – knowing you might have to pay some bills you’re your return can add another thing to your plate, so if you can afford it, ensure any bills are settled before you leave for your holiday
Allow a Buffer Day if Possible
I know it’s not always possible but if your schedule allows, avoid returning to work immediately after travelling home. A buffer day gives you space to unpack, do laundry, reset your routine, get over any jetlag, review emails, and rest properly before responsibilities resume. This often makes the difference between feeling refreshed and feeling overwhelmed when you return.
Use the Last Afternoon at Work Before You Leave to Plan Your Return
I know the last day at work before you leave for holiday can be hectic and rushed, but spending a spend a short, intentional period preparing for your return at work can help so much on your first day back and take a load of thinking off your mind. You are also likely to be more focused in the run up to your holiday compared to when you are first back at work. It’s all about making a little list.
THIS LIST MIGHT INCLUDE:
➡️ Writing a simple to-do list for your first day
➡️ Listing your top priorities for your first week back
➡️ Noting any deadlines or meetings already scheduled
Doing this while still focused prevents anxiety later and means you return with clarity rather than uncertainty
Start Work with Low-Demand Tasks
On your first working day, focus on simple, familiar tasks such as clearing your inbox, reviewing updates from colleagues and reviewing your task list are all low cognitive demand tasks that can to reactivate your work mindset without immediately demanding intense concentration.
Plan Small Pleasures into the First Week Back
Including some little things away from work can also support the transition back to everyday life. Friday can seem an age away one your first Monday back to work so giving yourself something to look forward to on your first weekend back can help the week feel lighter and prevents the weekend from feeling too distant.
Book a mid-week meal out or treat so there is a positive marker in the middle of the week. This doesn’t have to be a meal, it can also be a midweek express spa treatment after work.
Plan something enjoyable for your first weekend back, even something simple such as a walk, a visit to a favourite restaurant, or catching up friends can help to maintain a sense of balance. You can also sort through photos and videos taken on your cruise holiday to relive the special moments made – putting together a photo book or album is a great activity to lift the spirits.
Carry One Positive Habit Home with You
Cruises often improve sleep, encourage walking, or reduce screen time. Choose one habit to continue on your return to keep the cruise vibes going long after you disembark. For example, a morning walk, a proper lunch break, or leaving your phone aside in the evening, can prolong the benefits of your holiday going after your return.
Avoid Overloading the First Week
My advice when on a cruise is not to try to pack too much into a day on board or when in port – and the same applies to when you return home. Where possible, keep your diary lighter during the first few days. If you can, avoid back-to-back meetings, major presentations, or heavy decision-making immediately. Think of your first week as a re-entry phase rather than a sprint.
Be Kind to Yourself
Feeling flat or unmotivated for a day or two is normal. Understand that you might need to allow time for your energy to rebuild.
Things to remember when returning to work after a cruise
Returning from a cruise is a transition, not a switch. By planning ahead, you can reduce stress and return feeling grounded, organised, and calm. Booking shopping deliveries, arranging an easy first meal, setting priorities before you leave, and scheduling small treats into your first week back can all help.
Planning for your next cruise also helps too.
