For many travellers, crossing the Atlantic by ship is a dream journey steeped in romance and adventure. In this post I’ll share advice and tips on planning a transatlantic crossing on Cunard’s Queen Mary 2.
A Transatlantic crossing on Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 is certainly on my bucket list. While we had initially planned to celebrate a milestone birthday on the crossing, plans have had to be put on hold for a little while, but this crossing is certainly a priority when I am able to get back at sea.
The Queen Mary 2 (QM2) remains one of the most iconic vessels for a transatlantic voyage. This elegant Ocean Liner offers a unique blend of classic luxury and modern comfort. Which is why this is the ship I plan to take me on my very first journey across the Atlantic by sea.
For first-time voyagers (such as myself), planning this trip can bring up plenty of questions. So, I asked experienced Cunarders for their advice. Here, I share some of the advice I gained from these seasoned travellers who have crossed the Atlantic on the QM2 (some, MANY times and in both directions). I’ll share their advice and insights on choosing the best cabin, managing sea conditions, and making the most of every day at sea. I hope their advice helps you like it helped me.
Queen Mary 2 Transatlantic – Which Way Should You Go and When?
Choosing your direction – Eastbound vs. Westbound Crossings
One of my key questions was whether to cross eastbound (New York to Southampton) or westbound (Southampton to New York).
Each direction, I discovered has its unique advantages. Many seasoned Cunarders I asked preferred the westbound crossing since it allows you to “gain” an hour each day as you move across time zones, creating an even more leisurely experience, and this can enhance the relaxation of the trip.
On the eastbound route, you may lose an hour most days, which did feel disruptive to some. However, one seasoned traveller noted that the eastbound direction also benefits from favourable winds and calmer seas, potentially providing a smoother journey
Ultimately, the decision is up to your personal preference and travel plans. Personally, I’d like to experience the round trip (keep reading for further advice on this).
Top Tips On Choosing the Direction of Travel and Timing for a Transatlantic Crossing on Cunard Queen Mary 2:
Westbound (UK to NYC) you gain an extra hour each day, which helps with adjusting to time changes and you have the experience of arriving in NYC with views of the Statue of Liberty.
Eastbound (NYC to UK) you lose an hour each day but this is still better than the jet lag of flying in this direction. You also get to see Statue of Liberty at a more reasonable hour on departure from NYC.
Christmas crossings are popular for the festive atmosphere onboard.
Spring crossings (April and May) tend to have calmer crossings
Mid-August to mid-October usually see the most activity from Atlantic storms so bear this in mind.
If you have concerns about the weather, choose a crossing between December and May.
Fly First, Cruise Home. Some recommend flying to the departure city and cruising back home to avoid jet lag and baggage weight concerns for return flights.
What Accommodation Should You Choose for a Transatlantic Crossing on Cunard Queen Mary 2?
Cabin Selection – the value of Sheltered Balconies and Midship Locations
Apparently, according to my transatlantic travel buddies, cabin selection can make a big difference in your experience.
Many frequent QM2 travellers recommend opting for a sheltered balcony on a lower deck, particularly if you’re concerned about rough seas. As one experienced cruiser pointed out, these cabins are positioned to minimise exposure to weather, which can be helpful during the North Atlantic’s unpredictable conditions.
For travellers who enjoy the view without having to also endure the cold or windy weather, the sheltered balcony offers a private space to enjoy fresh air yet protected from the worst of the elements.
However, if you’re a bit prone to claustrophobia, another veteran voyager mentioned that a regular balcony might be a better choice despite the potential weather exposure. And for those who want to see every sunrise and sunset, another knowledgeable sailor suggested booking port side (left) when heading westbound and starboard (right) for eastbound to maximize sun exposure on the balcony.
Naturally many suggested booking the Queen’s Grill (if you can afford it), confirming that it definitely elevates the experience to the ultimate level of luxury (and I quite agree – after all, if it works for Ed Sheeran and Meryl Streep, it works for me). But even without booking the premium classes, QM2 provides an exceptional and elegant experience even if you’re sailing in an inside cabin.
Top Tips On Cabin Choice for a Transatlantic Crossing on Cunard Queen Mary 2:
Book a sheltered balcony to avoid exposure to high winds and rough seas.
For those prone to seasickness, book a cabin midship on a lower deck, where the movement of the ship is less noticeable.
If heading Westbound to New York, book a port-side cabin for sun exposure, and book starboard cabin for Eastbound journeys.
Keep an eye out for fluctuating cabin prices to secure the best deal.
For a splurge, book Queens Grill dining for a higher-end experience.
Inside cabins should also be considered as "there’s little to see beyond the ocean".
What Should you Pack for a Transatlantic Crossing on Cunard Queen Mary 2?
Packing and preparing for the variable weather
Crossing the Atlantic means facing a variety of weather patterns. The Atlantic can be calm and glassy, but it can also be foggy and rough, particularly in spring or winter months.
Seasoned travellers recommend packing layers and being prepared for all types of weather, as it can shift quickly. Many recommended packing ginger or seasickness remedies, as seas can range from calm to choppy without much warning. If you want to pack light and do laundry on ship then check out my Cunard Laundry Guide and Prices.
Adding to the weather considerations, one QM2 regular advised to always carry seasickness medication with you around the ship, particularly for trips during winter or fall when rough seas are more common.

Some recommend eating ginger, candied or fresh, to alleviate seasickness.
What can you do on so many sea days on a Transatlantic Crossing on Cunard Queen Mary 2?
Exploring Onboard Activities: Afternoon Tea, Hydrotherapy Pools, and More
Queen Mary 2 is filled with activities and enrichment events, making each day at sea a new adventure. It’s a difficult job trying to be bored on a transatlantic crossing.
Many experienced travellers highlighted afternoon tea as an absolute must. Having experienced Cunard afternoon tea on a previous QM2 voyage myself, I highly agree. One seasoned sailor recalled regretting missing this delightful experience on their first trip and urged me as a first timer not to make the same mistake. The elegant tea service is a hallmark of the QM2 experience and a wonderful way to meet fellow travellers.
The hydrotherapy pool, was also recommended by some as another indulgent option, offering a relaxing retreat. Many travellers also chose the library and promenade as their favourite spots; Walking on the promenade makes for a peaceful experience with breathtaking ocean views, while the library offers a cozy, quiet space to unwind and retreat to when the weather is at its worst.

Booking access to the hydrotherapy pool can provide a spa-like experience on board, but it can be pricey.
What Should You Do When You Arrive?
Taking Advantage of Arrival Ports: New York and Southampton
According to many QM2 Transatlantic Veterans, both New York and Southampton offer unique arrival experiences.
It seems that for those who want to soak in New York’s skyline, a westbound crossing is recommended. This gives you the opportunity you to pass by the Statue of Liberty and into New York Harbour. Arriving in Southampton, (while it’s not directly connected to London), offers and easy transfer for sightseeing or connect to other European destinations if you want to elongate your travel adventure
Travellers on a round trip may also need to clear immigration at certain ports, especially in New York. One fellow traveller shared advice for those on round trips about clearing U.S. immigration, and suggested that waiting areas can be crowded, and offered a gentle reminder to bring a book or snacks for the wait.
Top Tips On Excursions & Immigration Tips in New York
All passengers are required to disembark and clear U.S. immigration when arriving in New York.
Bring essentials to keep yourself comfortable during waiting times.
Consider taking the Red Hook Ferry to Wall Street or a highlights tour if you’d rather avoid the port waiting area.
Get up early for arrival in NYC
Should You do One Way or Return on a Transatlantic Crossing on Cunard Queen Mary 2?
Maximizing Your Time and Experience
For some, a single crossing was enough, while others opted for a round trip to extend their time on the QM2. One fellow Cunarder recommended a single crossing for beginners “to see if you enjoy the journey before committing to a round trip”.
However, a round trip can be more economical than booking two one-way crossings separately, but as another traveller observed, “it’s generally recommended as a second or third experience after trying a one-way voyage”.

Round-trip crossings can be more economical than separate journeys, allowing for additional onboard relaxation.
My Final Thoughts
Time to embrace the adventure
Crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Mary 2 is a bucket-list journey for me. QM2 clearly offers a distinct journey that blends nostalgia with modern luxury.
It seems after chatting with many experienced QM2 transatlantic travellers, each voyage is unique. It’s clear that on this itinerary the ship is THE destination. There are lots of things to consider – but it seems that things like packing, accommodation choice and activity planning help my fellow transatlantic voyagers to make the most of their experience on board.
I’m still planning my trip but I’m looking forward to the thrill of crossing the Atlantic and the romance of sailing past the Statue of Liberty. I hope sharing these insights from seasoned QM2 travellers, has helped you if you’re about to embark on your first TA voyage in terms of the of direction, cabin choice, what to do and what to pack to make it a memorable crossing filled with comfort and excitement.
Bon voyage! whenever you decide to sail.
