Amadeus River Cruises has confirmed plans to expand into Portugal with the launch of its first ever ship on the Douro River. Set to debut in 2028, the brand-new Amadeus Douro will sail between March and November, exploring one of Europe’s most scenic and culturally rich regions in signature Amadeus style.

River Cruising on the Douro with Amadeus
Purpose-built for the Douro’s winding route and historic locks, the new ship will feature hybrid propulsion technology, combining refined design with a more environmentally conscious approach to river cruising. This development marks a significant step for the line as it brings its well established onboard experience to one of the fastest growing river cruise destinations in Europe.
The Douro Valley, renowned for its terraced vineyards, historic towns and sunlit landscapes, has become increasingly popular. Amadeus aims to offer an immersive way to experience the region, blending elegant surroundings with thoughtfully designed itineraries that showcase local culture, wine heritage and natural beauty.
Itineraries will centre on round trip sailings from Porto, travelling through the heart of the Douro Valley towards the Spanish border. Watch this space for further details on the ship’s design and its inaugural sailings which are expected to be released in the coming months.
Facilities on board Amadeus Duoro
On board, Amadeus Douro will accommodate 111 guests across 54 staterooms and two suites. Many cabins will feature drop down panoramic windows or private balconies, allowing uninterrupted views of the passing scenery. Public spaces will include an expansive sun deck with a swimming pool, a lounge and bar area, and the line’s Café Vienna, a sociable area and a firm favourite with Amadeus guests.

Dining will focus on regional flavours, with menus highlighting Portuguese cuisine paired with locally sourced wines. This emphasis on gastronomy is expected to be a key part of the overall experience, reflecting the Douro’s reputation as one of Europe’s leading wine producing regions.
