There are a lot of pre-cruise hotels in Southampton. If it’s your first time sailing from Southampton and you’re current debating where to stay, then this post will share some useful tips to help you decide.

After several cruises from Southampton, along with more than a few pre-cruise hotel stays, I have realised that the ‘best’ pre-cruise hotel in Southampton is not the same for everyone and in fact I’ve changed my priorities based on who i’m travelling with and when i’m travelling. So the ‘right’ choice depends on many things – how you are arriving into port, your budget, and how stress-free you want embarkation morning to feel. Read on to find out how to choose the best pre-cruise hotel for you.

What Type of Stay Do You Want?

I always ask myself what I actually want from my pre-cruise stay.

Sometimes I want to make the night before the cruise an extension of my holiday – so a bit of luxury or pampering is in order. These might be the occasions where I want a relaxed start to the holiday. So i’m looking for comfortable hotel with a bar and restaurant and perhaps some spa facilities.

On some occasions i’m just looking for a simple, practical overnight stop and the closest and cheapest possible bed to the cruise terminal and my priority is convenience and a good night’s sleep.

Most times I don’t necessarily need luxury, but I do want the experience to feel calm and straightforward so i’ll opt for a combination of the two and keep a look out for great deals.

Are You Driving to Southampton or Taking Public Transport?

So how you are getting to port will mean some hotel are more appropriate than other. For example if I’m driving to Southampton, my decision process changes completely. Hotels slightly outside the city centre are often more affordable, more spacious and easier to access from the motorway.

They also tend to offer better parking options. Many provide on-site parking, either charged separately or included as part of a cruise package. In this situation, staying 15 to 20 minutes even 40 minutes from the port can reduce costs without adding much inconvenience, provided you allow extra time on embarkation morning. Personally, when I am driving, I don’t feel the need to stay right next to the terminal and there’s a lot more affordable options open to me.

Where Are You Parking?

Parking is often one of the biggest cost factors when cruising from Southampton. While you might book a hotel with onsite parking, it might not offer parking for the duration of your cruise.

I always ask whether the hotel offers on-site parking, whether it is included or charged daily, and whether there is a dedicated park and cruise package. I also compare the cost with official port parking. Sometimes a hotel that appears more expensive initially becomes better value once parking is factored in. For cruises lasting seven to fourteen nights, parking costs can increase quickly, so it is worth checking carefully.

Can You to Walk to the Terminal or Will You Need to Take a Taxi?

The simplest possible embarkation morning involves just a short walk from your hotel to the cruise terminal. Obviously the amount of luggage is an important factor to consider but being able to walk to the terminal means you can cut out an expensive taxi fare, there’s also no need to pre-book a taxi, no risk of traffic delays and no waiting around for transfers.

Some Southampton hotels are within walking distance of the cruise terminals, while others require a 15 to 20 minute drive. That said, while you will save on a taxi fare by walking, city centre hotels close to the port can be more expensive and cancel any savings out. Even so the convenience and simplicity remains the same.

If you do want to walk – look for hotels which are near to your terminal. Horizon and City terminals provide the widest choice, but there are also some hotels towards the Ocean Terminal and QE2 Terminal which might be better.

The Mayflower Terminal will always have the lonest walk – even if you stay in the city centre – so while it’s flat, you cant always count on the weather so a taxi might be best for this terminal.

Is Breakfast Important to You?

It may seem like a small detail, but on cruise day it makes a difference. Some hotels include a full hot buffet breakfast, while others charge extra or offer only limited continental options. On busy cruise mornings, breakfast areas can become crowded and queues can form, so timing matters.

If I have an early embarkation time, having breakfast on-site is convenient. If I am boarding later in the day, picking something up nearby can work just as well. Personally, I prefer breakfast to be included so that it is one less thing to organise.

Are You Travelling in Peak Cruise Season?

Southampton hotels fill up quickly during busy sailings, particularly throughout school holidays, the summer months and during major ship departures.

If I am cruising in peak season, I book as early as possible. Prices near the port tend to rise, and availability drops quickly. In some cases, staying slightly further out provides better value and more choice. Leaving it late significantly reduces options, especially for the most convenient locations.

My Personal Rule for Choosing a Southampton Cruise Hotel

Over time, I’ve developed a simple formula: If I’m arriving by train or coach, I stay within walking distance of the terminal. Not that I’ve done this myself, but the same applies if you are flying into Heathrow or Gatwick and have decided to head straight to Southampton instead of staying in London for a few days before your cruise.

If I’m driving, I look slightly outside the city centre for better value and easier parking. When sailing in peak season, I book as early as possible. Convenience comes first. Cost comes second. Reducing stress always matters to me on embarkation day.

But above all my golden rule is:

➡️ ALWAYS AIM TO ARRIVE IN PORT THE DAY BEFORE YOUR CRUISE! ⬅️

Bon Voyage!
