Over the past 20 years, and over 250 nights at sea, I have visited more cruise ports than I can easily count. Some have been beautiful. Some have been convenient. Some have been perfectly pleasant. But on a Norwegian Fjords cruise, I discovered what is now my favourite cruise port of call ever – and hasn’t been topped since (some have come close – like Corfu and Kotor). It got me thinking about why? because I guess we all judge ports slightly differently.

What Makes a Great Cruise Port of Call?

When choosing a cruise itinerary, the ports matter just as much as the ship. Over the years, I have developed a personal checklist that helps me decide whether a port is just good, or genuinely special. Here are the key things I look for.

Why Flam Is My Favourite Cruise Port in the Norwegian Fjords

I visited Flam during a Norwegian Fjords cruise with P&O Cruises in 2019, and it exceeded every expectation I had.

➡️ It Feels Incredibly Safe

Flam is one of the safest places I have ever explored independently from a cruise ship. It is small, welcoming and easy to navigate. You step off the ship and immediately feel comfortable.
When travelling with children, that peace of mind is invaluable.

➡️ Everything Is Within Easy Reach

One of the biggest advantages of Flam cruise port is its layout. The ship docks right beside the village. There is no need for tenders or lengthy shuttle journeys. You can wander straight into the heart of Flam within minutes. If you need to return to the ship for any reason, it is quick and simple. That convenience makes the entire day feel relaxed.

➡️ The Flam Railway Is Unmissable

No discussion of Flam would be complete without mentioning the famous Flam Railway.
This spectacular train journey climbs from the fjord up into the mountains, passing waterfalls, dramatic valleys and panoramic viewpoints along the way. It is widely regarded as one of the most scenic railway journeys in the world, and it is easy to see why. For cruise passengers, it is a straightforward and rewarding way to explore further inland without complicated planning.

➡️ There Is More to Do Than You Might Expect

Flam may be small, but it offers a surprising amount of choice. You can:

✅ Take scenic fjord walks directly from the port
Hire electric eco-cars to explore independently
✅ Visit the Flam Railway and Museum
✅ Enjoy local food at cosy bakeries and cafés
✅ Browse charming souvenir shops
✅ Relax with a drink at the Flam Brewery
✅ Let children enjoy the nearby park
✅ Even on a short port stop, you can create a varied and enjoyable day without feeling rushed.

➡️ The Scenery Is Extraordinary

Flam is achingly picturesque in all weathers. Surrounded by towering mountains and deep blue fjord waters, it delivers that undeniable wow factor. It is the sort of place where every angle seems photo-worthy. Waking up to see your cruise ship nestled within the fjord is something you do not forget in a hurry.

Would I Return to Flam?

Absolutely.

Flam passes my ultimate test with ease. I would happily return for a longer stay and explore more of the surrounding fjord region. Knowing that there are accommodation options available makes that possibility very real. That says everything. Out of all the cruise ports I have visited over 250-plus nights at sea, Flam is the one that stands out as my personal favourite.

Planning a Norwegian Fjords Cruise?

If you are considering a Norwegian Fjords itinerary and see Flam listed as a port of call, I would strongly encourage you to take notice. It combines safety, accessibility, natural beauty and genuine experiences in a way that few ports manage. For me, it truly is the golden buzzer of cruise ports. Have you visited Flam on a cruise? I would love to hear whether it made your favourites list too.
