As we tend to have limited time in each port on a cruise holiday, choosing the right shore excursion is important. Whatever port you’re in – there’s a good chance there’ll be a jolly red Hop-On Hop-Off (HOHO) bus winding around your destination. Hop-On Hop-Off (HOHO) buses stand out for me as a flexible, convenient, and cost-effective way to experience a port and something you should consider for a smart and stress-free choice for your next port adventure.

What Are Hop-On Hop-Off Buses?

Hop-On Hop-Off buses are sightseeing vehicles that operate along fixed routes, stopping at key attractions and landmarks throughout a city. They allow you to “hop off” to explore a location and then “hop on” a later bus when you’re ready to continue. Most HOHO buses feature open-top decks for panoramic views, multilingual audio commentary, and regular departure intervals, typically every 15–30 minutes.

1. Flexibility and Convenience

When your ship docks for just a few hours, time is precious. HOHO buses are an ideal option for cruisers with limited shore time. They offer the ultimate in flexibility you choose where to go, how long to stay, and what to skip. Most HOHO itineraries start and end at the cruise port offering even greater convenience.

Unlike traditional guided tours with rigid schedules, HOHO buses allow you to explore at your own pace, so you can spend longer at sites that interest you the most. And with frequent departures, there’s no stress about missing the next bus. Just make sure you catch one in enough time to get your back to port before your ship leaves.

2. Coverage of All Major Attractions

Most HOHO routes are designed to cover a city’s most iconic landmarks; from historic cathedrals and museums to the main shopping districts and scenic viewpoints. This coverage ensures that even if you only have half a day in port, you can still experience the highlights.

I think doing a single HOHO circuit in sprawling cities like Barcelona, Rome, or Lisbon is a great way to get an overview of the destinations history, culture, and layout and is absolutely perfect for first-time visitors.

3. Cost-Effective Sightseeing

Cruise excursions can be costly – FACT, but HOHO buses provide excellent value. They offer a great budget-friendly option for visiting multiple attractions without the need to shell out for taxis or guided tours. Many operators also offer online discounts, family passes, or combination deals with local attractions too which adds even more value.

This cost-friendly approach helps you make the most of your port day without overspending, and leaves more in your pocket for souvenirs or (my preference) a relaxing cocktail back on board.

4. Informative Commentary

One of the things I love the most about HOHO buses is the recorded commentary. I’ve found that the guides and audio systems provide great insights, anecdotes, and historical context about the sights you pass on your journey.

A great commentary from a guided tour always transforms simple ‘sightseeing’ into a more meaning full exploration of the port. This is great for cruisers who appreciate learning about the destinations they visit.Of course this commentary is optional, so if you don’t want to tune in, you don’t have to and you can just sit back and watch the sights while taking in the sounds of the city instead.

5. Hassle-Free and Stress-Free Travel

Navigating a new city especially in a language other than your own can be daunting – even with Google Translate on your phone. HOHO buses remove this stress entirely. Routes and stops are clearly marked, and timetables are easy to follow. So there’s no need to worry about public transport systems, currency confusion, or negotiating taxi fares.

HOHO buses also offer a comfortable, energy-conserving alternative to walking tours or crowded metro systems.

6. Perfect for Families and Multigenerational Groups

For families or multigenerational cruise groups, HOHO buses provide a safe, comfortable, and air-conditioned environment for everyone to enjoy. From my experience travelling with younger kids and elderly parents with mobility restrictions, its always been a great choice. Many services are also wheelchair-accessible too, with ramps and dedicated seating areas.

Plus, our kids always love the novelty of the open-top buses, while my parents appreciated the convenience of being chauffeured between attractions without the logistical headaches. In cities like Barcelona, for example, HOHO buses make it easy to visit major landmarks without wrestling with prams or navigating metro stations and this is a welcome relief especially during hot summer months.

7. A Great Introduction for First-Time Visitors

If it’s your first time in a port city, a HOHO bus is the perfect way to get your bearings. I’ve always found it to be a great way to get an overview of the city’s layout, major neighbourhoods, and key landmarks. Plus i also like following our route on google maps to see exactly where we are.

This is particularly useful if you plan to return to the port on a future cruise, for example. ON our last trip to Barcelona, we still didn’t have enough time to tick everything on our list so the HOHO tour we went on has helped us to decide which areas we want to explore on our next visit.

8. Scenic Routes and Photo Opportunities

HOHO bus routes are carefully planned to showcase the best views a city has to offer. The good news is that this means that you can capture fantastic photos of skylines, monuments, and local life all from the comfort of the open-top deck, and all without the hassle of walking long distances.

So whether you’re cruising along the Thames in London or admiring the architecture of Paris, your elevated vantage point provides some fantastic photo opportunities.

9. Accessibility and Safety

Another important thing for me on HOHO buses are the safety and comfort aspects. When in port it’s important to keep your wits about you so you don’t get taken advantage of by pickpockets when you’re guard is down trying to navigate on a map or on your phone.

HOHO buses are also operated by reputable companies with clear schedules, so they are a secure and reliable way to explore – particularly if you are a solo female traveller. Most buses are also equipped with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, allowing you to stay connected, check maps, or share your adventures online in real-time.

Tips for Making the Most of Your HOHO Experience

When it comes to short excursions for cruisers, Hop-On Hop-Off buses tick all the right boxes for me. And you should definitely, consider swapping the standard excursion for a HOHO bus adventure for one of your next port days.

Here are some of my top tips to get the most out of your HOHO experience:

✅ Check the route and timetable before disembarking to match your interests and cruise schedule.

✅ Plan your stops and prioritise must-see attractions to make the most of your limited time.

✅ Buy tickets in advance to skip queues and benefit from online discounts

✅ Bring essentials such as water, sunscreen, and a camera.

✅ Confirm accessibility features in advance if travelling with mobility needs.
